Should You Install Your Own Fence?
Some people may tell you to install your own fence, and in some cases you can, but we do not recommend it. Some types of fencing may seem easy to install, but if you install it incorrectly, it may not stand up under duress, and a fence that falls down, breaks or collapses is no good to you. In addition, some types of fences, like wrought iron fences or chain link fences, will be very difficult for you to install on your own, and you could even injure yourself or damage the fence if you try. If you do damage your fence while trying to install it, it will probably void any warranty you might have on your fencing.
With all the inherent problems with self-installing fences, there’s no reason to do it when Greenerz can install your fence for you very affordably and quickly, with no stress for you. We can install your fence right the first time, so you know it will last, and can advise you on how to keep your fence sturdy and strong for years to come.
Types of Fencing
When it comes time for you to install a new fence, you will have to decide what type of fence you want, and there are a number of interesting choices, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Our fence specialists are expert at installing or repairing all kinds of fences. Possible fence types you may be interested in for your home include:
Wood
Wood is the classic fence material, and still remains a great choice for fences today. When properly maintained, wood fences can last for years, even decades. They are one of the most environmentally-friendly if not the most environmentally-friendly choice when to comes to fences because they are completely biodegradable and can be recycled when they are no longer effective. There are even environmentally-friendly treatments for wood fences that can protect them against rot with minimal negative effects on the environment. If you are interested in a wood fence, we can probably install the entire fence on the same day of service. Depending upon the size of the fence, it might only take a few hours before you can go back about your business.
Wood fences are available in a variety of wood types and styles to suit your personal taste. Red cedar is probably the most popular choice for wood fences, but you can choose redwood, pine or other types as well. Styles of wood fencing have more variety than probably any other type of fence. Typical wood fence styles include picket fence, paddock, stockade, spaced board, board on board and split rail.
We can also fully customize your fence with a variety of stains, widths and heights, and even decorative features like flower boxes. The right stain can ward off sun damage and color-fading while making the fence more water resistant. Wood fencing is also the most affordable fence material you can find.
Vinyl/PVC
Another popular choice for your fence is vinyl (PVC is a type of vinyl). Vinyl is also a very inexpensive material for fencing and has a number of useful benefits over wood. For one, vinyl is more durable than wood. It is much better for areas that may be subject to high winds or excessive moisture. Conditions that could cause a wood fence to break or collapse are unlikely to affect vinyl fences significantly. Your vinyl fence will also last for years and years with essentially no maintenance. It will not change color, fade, rot or rust. The occasional cleaning is pretty much all you need to do for your vinyl fence, which can come in a variety of colors to match your chosen décor.
Although some do not realize it because it is a synthetic material, vinyl also makes a great fencing choice for the environment. There are no hazardous chemicals in vinyl, it is made of salt derivatives and hydrocarbons and it can be recycled when it is no longer useful.
Wrought Iron
A wrought iron fence is a little bit more of an investment than a wood or vinyl fence, but some homeowners swear by them. You can expect to pay a little more for wrought iron fencing in Los Angeles, and there is maintenance required, but you may find the benefits outweigh the costs.
The most notable benefit of a wrought iron fence is its appearance. An ornamental iron fence is beautiful and adds a touch of class and elegance to your home. Wrought iron fences can be very intricate or quite basic, but even the simplest of wrought iron fences can seem to elevate an entire home, letting neighbors and various passersby know that what is within its confines is something to be envied.
Wrought iron fences, which can be made from steel or aluminum as well as iron, are also among the most secure type of fences. You can’t knock them down or smash through them anywhere nearly as easily as you good a wood or vinyl fence, and the spikes on top means you can’t climb over them. Wrought iron fences are also extremely durable, and we will treat them with a protective coating to make sure they last even longer and are even more resistant to damage or hazardous weather conditions.
If home protection and/or appearance are your priorities over cost-effectiveness and easy care, you want to consider letting Greenerz install a wrought iron fence for your Los Angeles or other southern California home.
Chain Link
You are more likely to find chain link fences around businesses than homes, but you may want to consider a chain link fence as it provides most of the benefits of a wrought iron fence without any of the challenges. It is not nearly as expensive as a wrought iron fence, and where a wrought iron fence will require significant maintenance, chain link fences are basically maintenance free. There is really no need to paint or clean your chain link fence.
Despite being cheaper and easier to maintain, chain link fences can be just as effective or almost as effective as wrought iron fences for security purposes. These are fences used to enclose prisons, military bases and airports, so you know they have a reliable reputation for security.
Although the appearance of chain link fences can turn people away, you should know that we can install chain link fences in a variety of colors, not just the drab steel color you are used to. You can also choose the size and style of the links, so you do have some design options with a chain link fence for your home. We can also install a chain link fence with a sliding gate if a swing out gate is inconvenient.
Aluminum
Another great, durable alternative to wrought iron is an aluminum fence. Aluminum fences don’t have the appearance problem of chain link fences, they can actually be quite attractive, but they are much less expensive than wrought iron. Not only that, aluminum fences require no maintenance and can last for decades, and will not rust like wrought iron fences. Aluminum fences are also resistant to insects and harsh weather, and can be made from recycled materials. All they require is the occasional washing to keep them clean.
If there is a type of fencing material that you do not see here, or you have questions about any of the materials above, please feel free to give us a call at Greenerz and ask us any of your fencing questions any time.
Fence Maintenance Tips
If you have an aluminum, chain link or vinyl fence, the good news is you don’t really have to worry about maintenance; just keep your fence clean. On the other hand, if you have a wood fence, there are some things that you can and should do to keep it looking its best and lasting. First, if you see termites or ants around your fence, call an exterminator right away. Your fence won’t last long against these pests. Make sure that no dirt is touching the bottom of your wood fence, and remove any weeds, rocks or other debris that collects in the fence on a regular basis. Every few years, you may want to re-stain or reseal your fence.
If you have a wrought iron fence, maintenance is a little bit trickier. Every once in a while you will need to sand down the fence to remove the rust, and you may need to repaint it afterwards. You may find that you are better off simply calling Greenerz for regularly scheduled wrought iron fence maintenance.
