1. Know Your Kitchen

Understand the dimensions of your kitchen, what will work and what won’t. Kitchen islands are cool, but if your kitchen is so small it means family members will be squeezing past that island on both sides every morning, it’s probably not a good idea. If you’ve got only one entrance to your kitchen, you’d better make sure it’s wide enough to accommodate that extra-large fridge or dishwasher you’re thinking about buying or you’re going to have a big problem. Be sure to only consider designs where all doors; cabinets, refrigerator, dishwasher, etc., can open and close freely.

2. Know Your Materials

Consider what new materials will be needed for your kitchen remodeling project. If you’re going to need new fixtures, cabinets, appliances, pick these out before hand to save your contractor time and you money. You may even want to bring in a professional designer to help you make a plan before you bring your contractor into the mix.

3. Leave the Plumbing

Moving your dishwasher to the other side of the kitchen may seem like a good idea, but if it’s currently located where the only hookup is, moving it will mean a big, long, expensive hassle. It’s probably not worth it. Similarly, you probably don’t need to knock down walls or relocate your refrigerator to have a beautiful remodel. See if you can create your dream kitchen around the skeleton that already exists.

4. Pay Attention to the Lighting

A lot of people don’t think about lighting when remodeling their kitchen, but how and where your kitchen is illuminated can make a world of difference. Whether you’re cooking, eating, or just hanging out, you want to be able to see what you’re doing in your new kitchen. Finding and installing the right kind of lighting is usually not too expensive and can really transform your kitchen.
